I recently finished my new book, 'Hell in a Storm'. I am in the process of sending my query submissions to agents and I am really hoping one will be interested enough to give it a look.
I look back at my other books and realize I was not ready. Even the book I placed on this site, '
Maroz', was not good enough to make the shelves. Trust me, it is never easy for a writer to admit their work was not good, but however much it pains me, the truth is the truth and it was not good enough.
Another important fact however, is that practice really goes a long ways to making one better. With the completion of Hell in a Storm, I really feel confident it is worthy of being in print. It is the first of my books I truly felt that way about. It is the first book I have gotten anyone else to read (other than on this blog). My best friend read it and enjoyed it. I know, I know, friends and family will say things are good because they don't want to hurt you. I think he would laugh at that statement as much as I do. We have never had a problem with keeping it straight with each other. If he did not enjoy it, he would have had no problem saying so. In fact there were many parts that he didn't care for and that made me go back over those parts and see what I needed to fix. In the end however, my friend, who does not read fiction to begin with, wished he could go out and buy the next book.
I am hoping beyond all hope that I will find an agent who will read it. I dream a dozen dreams every day of that moment I hear and agent tell me they want to represent me. Every night in bed I lose myself in the fantasy that I will someday hear an agent tell me the publisher likes my book. I do not dream of being rich or famous. I dream of doing well enough that it will pay for my bills, my wife will not have to work her lousy job, and I can take care of my mother. I dream of seeing my pen-name in print and knowing that is my new career. Working from home, using my imagination, rather than working 9 to 11 hours a day in a job that has no real future.
I cannot explain in mere words how hard it is on me to get up early every morning after spending the night trying to sleep because I cannot seem to shut down my mind. My imagination is like a world of its own and too often it controls me rather than the other way around. I sometimes think that writer's block must be something made up. It simply cannot be real. After all, who could ever have a problem with coming up with something to add to a story? I know it is real. It is just hard to picture it. In fact, it may be the only thing I cannot imagine.
Well, if I go through my list of agents and cannot find one to represent me, I will then begin to add 'Hell in a Storm' as the next book here at My Fantasy Novel. You will have to forgive me for saying that I really hope it does not come down to that. With each rejection, it is a knife to the heart of my dreams, but I must continue to search and hope.
